Aoi Leander
Int’l Inst. of Interdisciplinary Development
Short Bio
I study how knowledge is constructed and maintained within interdisciplinary environments, with a focus on how institutions, researchers, and data infrastructures collectively shape what counts as valid evidence. My work draws from science and technology studies (STS), sociology of knowledge, and digital ethnography to examine evolving epistemic norms in AI research and transdisciplinary innovation contexts.
Research Interests
- Epistemic infrastructures in interdisciplinary research
- Knowledge politics and scientific authority
- Collaborative methods in digital research
- Reflexivity in data-driven sciences
Short CV
- 2025–present: Researcher, Int’l Inst. of Interdisciplinary Development
- 2023–2025: Graduate Fellow, Center for Knowledge Cultures
- 2020–2023: MSc, Sociology of Knowledge and Science Studies
Current Project
My current research investigates “boundary work” in collaborative AI research settings — how engineers and social scientists negotiate expertise and trust when designing transparency mechanisms and accountability reports.

Abstract
This project examines how researchers from distinct epistemic communities build mutual understanding while co-producing data and interpretations. It maps how “epistemic translations” occur in project meetings, data interfaces, and internal review processes, contributing to a theory of situated interdisciplinarity.
